July's inspiration will come from the painting 'Octoroon Girl by Archibald Motley

Octoroon Girl by Archibald Motley
(as suggested by Robin Jenkins)
Diva Demand for an extra 6 bonus points try and
work the following into your layout.

1. A Color or Black and White pic of yourself =  1pt
2. Shades of Red and Maroon colors (Monochramatic) = 2pts
3. Include a hat or gloves somewhere on the layout = 3pts

NOTE - From June we are now looking for individual entries for ARTastic, you may combine your entry with a sketch but we no longer want entries that combine other challenges as we feel the ladies that do the right thing and take the time to enter independent entries are disadvantaged when it comes to winning prizes. If it means we lose a few entries, so be it!

The inlinkz post will go up shortly!

The Design Team have put together some great submissions,
so lots of inspiration to share with you all  :)

Entries for  "Octoroon Girl" will close
Friday 29th July at midnight.

Looking forward to seeing some great entries this month :)

Cheers

Michelle Hernandez submission...........

She Tried

The entry for ARTastic is "She Tried". The painting is GORGEOUS! I was worried that my more "modern" style would clash with the painting but I realized I have all this great romantic paper and embellies sitting around and that I've been wanting to use them - I really like the resulting page- it's now one of my "faves."

Our Guest DT member for July is......

Michelle Hernandez

Here is Michelles Bio........

I first started scrapping in 2009 when I developed complications during my first pregnancy. My doctor suggested I take up a hobby I could do at home to distract me from the stress of the situation. At first I just wrote in my journal and concentrated on decorating the nursery but I got really frustrated with my lack of drawing skills so I started looking for hand made wall art and stumbled the paper crafting community online. I've been hooked ever since.

Creating a layout is actually a big challenge for me. I prefer small print background papers and I LOVE fussy cutting to add pizzaz to a page. When I find myself completely stuck I "lift" ideas from other people's layouts (but never the whole or even large portions of a page). I also use sketches and keep notes of innovative things I want to try.

I get inspiration from magazine layouts (all magazines not just crafty ones) subway adverts, art or museum exhibits and old book/record covers.  RARELY do I have a final layout in mind when I sit down. My best pages literally form themselves as I sit down with some paper and photos. I am a really slow scrapper- even simple pages take a couple of days. I find that leaving a page alone for a few hours gives me perspective on design flaws and I can fix those before I stick everything down. Finally I always write my journaling on another piece of paper before I add it to my layout- sometimes it's a struggle to find the words for what I feel so many pages just have titles.

Scrappy things I love beyond all reason: woodgrain patterns, grid/graph patterns, fabric/cloth patterns, pop dots, paper punches, velvet ribbon, clear stamps, clashing or vibrant colors and Thickers. If I had to choose only 1 item to receive in unlimited supply I would say print paper. You can make anything with a good print and some scissors- all else is icing on the cake.

I'm currently on design Teams for Paper Issues- a great website that allows you to link up past or current creations as long as they fit the bi-monthly "theme", True Xoxo Girls- a scrap lift challenge website and Punky Scraps a challenge site that encourages you to get some attitude in your scrap pages.

Thank you SO MUCH for allowing me a chance to share my art and photo passion. :)

Shop Girl

Hi Shazza,

Here is my layout for the Octoroon Girl challenge. I took a trip to Victoria a couple of years ago with a friend and we went shopping at the Queen Victoria Markets and tried on lots of hats. Here's a snapshot of the one I ended up buying. I thought it was a great photo for the challenge.

Cheers for now!
Michelle :)

Tap, tap Tap

Hello ladies!  This is a photo is of me when I was seven years old.  My parents had me in Tap Dance, which did not last too long because I enjoyed sports too much.  Great photo inspiration and I cannot wait to see all the beautiful LO's this month.

Things I Love

THINGS I LOVE
Love B&W pictures and monochromatic, so this challenge was heaps of fun.  I went with the ‘red’ tones and used Crate paper. Kept the embellishments to a minimum and found a cute button in my stash for the ‘hat’ criteria.  Have tried to make my journalling like pattern paper, with a block of continuous words.
Thanks Shazza!!

Lucky Me

Hi Shazza,

This has been a lovely LO to find inspiration from.
What a terrific piece of art, & what a wonderful
artist Motley was...I have read his biography &
find him fascinating.

I have used a photo taken last year at Loch Ard Gorge
& used red/brown colouring shades that I must admit I love.
I am wearing a lovely warm hat, but have also hand cut a
pair of gloves that are just below & to the side of
the photo. Little bit wonky...but that is so like me!!

I hope the gals enjoy their July inspirational LO's
as much as I have...was great!

Cheers, Debi

Robin Jenkin's submission......

Remember Who I Am

Hey Shazza, here's my submission for July.  I had to pull out my November 2010 s.e.i. kit to find red and maroon papers!  I used an excerpt from a Maya Angelou poem called "I Almost Remember" as my journaling.  It says "... on late evenings when/quiet inhabits my garden/when grass sleeps and/streets are only paths for silent mist/I seem to remember/Smiling."  You'll also find I've used a digi image of a retro woman under a big hat, along with quite a bit of stitching that I did on this LO.  I've also added a couple of fabric flowers, and I created the red polka dot flowers with a new punch that I bought at my Stampin Up May club meeting.  Thanks for using "Octoroon Girl" by Archibald Motely this month!

Best regards,
Robin

Imagine

Hi Shazza,

Really enjoyed this LO, Don't normally scrap a picture of just myself, so this was fun.. Loved the inspiration painting  and diva demands for this challenge. Got to play around with a couple of my new dies with this one... ( the rosette, rolled rose an spiral flowers..)

Have added in all the diva demands:
Photo of myself: check ( managed to snap this one of myself sitting in the front yard..)
Monochromatic red/maroon: Check
and a hat or gloves: check.. I have a crown on my die cut.

happy creating

Moments With You

Hi Shazz,
Here's my July submission.
I combined two criteria by cropping a picture of me wearing a hat, or anyway the closest thing to a hat you'll ever see me wearing.  The third criteria, using only shades of red and maroon colours was a true challenge.  I had never attempted anything coming close to a monochromatic LO, and it didn't come easy at first, especially since I found I own surprisingly few red papers.  However, while working on this LO, I grew to like it more and more, and I especially like the tone on tone alphas.
The pictures speek for themselves.  Last winter we had quite a lot of snowy days, and after school, my husband and I sometimes took the kids out for a walk with their sled.  The joy on their faces while sledding down a small hill or while having snowball fights is priceless, and always brings such joy to my heart.  I hope I was able to bring that joy to life in my page.  Thank you for another great challenge!
Hugs
Peggy
